The Grand Junction Police Department is releasing the following information on behalf of the 21st Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT).
On Thursday, February 3, 2022, a trooper with the Colorado State Patrol initiated a traffic stop in the area of 1st Street and Gunnison Avenue shortly after 10:30pm. During the course of the traffic stop, an officer involved shooting occurred. One adult male suspect was ultimately apprehended. A previous release regarding this incident can be found here.
The 21st Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) was activated, and law enforcement officials began a thorough investigation into the officer involved shooting. Based on the investigation, detectives have arrested John Dijulio, age 37. Dijulio is in the custody of the Mesa County Detention Facility. The charges related to this incident include:
- Felony Menacing – F5
- 1st Degree Trespass of a Dwelling – F5
- Possession of a Weapon by a Previous Offender – F6
- Obstructing a Peace Officer – M2
- Resisting Arrest – M2
Additionally, Dijulio had two unrelated outstanding warrants at the time of his arrest.

All officer-involved shootings in Mesa County are investigated by the 21st Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team, which is comprised of representatives of the Grand Junction Police Department, Mesa County Sheriff’s Office, Fruita Police Department, Palisade Police Department, Colorado State Patrol, Colorado Department of Corrections, 21st Judicial District Attorney’s Office, and Colorado Bureau of Investigation. Because Colorado State Patrol personnel were involved in this incident, the Grand Junction Police Department is leading this investigation on behalf of CIRT.
