On 5/24/24, at approximately 4:10 p.m., 911 dispatchers with the Grand Junction Regional Communications Center received a report of a stabbing which occurred at Lucky Me Liquor located at 2992 Patterson Road. Officers arrived in the area to find the victim, an adult male, with an apparent knife wound. The victim was transported to the hospital by the Grand Junction Fire Department with non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect fled the scene in a vehicle and was located at a residence in the area of N 29 Road and Epps Drive by the Grand Junction Police Department and Colorado State Patrol. The suspect refused to exit the residence and remained uncooperative. SWAT operators with the Grand Junction Police Department and Mesa County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to assist in contacting the suspect, identified as Donnie Tielor Powell (age 31). At approximately 7:30 p.m., Powell was taken into custody and charged with the following:
- Assault in the Second Degree
- Harassment
- Menacing
- Theft
- Third Degree Motor Vehicle Theft
- Obstructing a Peace Officer
- Resisting Arrest
- Menacing with a Real/Simulated Weapon
Out of an abundance of caution, a shelter-in-place was issued for the surrounding area and has since been lifted. The roadway was also closed and has been reopened. The Grand Junction Police Department believes this to be an isolated incident and there is no ongoing danger to the community. This remains an ongoing investigation and there is no further information available at this time.
