Officers with the Grand Junction Police Department responded to an assault which occurred at Rocket Park located at 1827 N 26 Street on 05/24/24 at approximately 10:00 p.m. The suspect approached an adult male in the park and a verbal dispute occurred. The suspect then physically assaulted the male before retreating into a residence located in the 2500 block of Hall Avenue. The victim was transported to the hospital by the Grand Junction Fire Department with non-life-threatening injuries. Officers contacted the suspect, later identified as Joseph Mendez, at the residence and took him into custody without incident. Joseph Mendez (age 29) was arrested and remanded to the Mesa County Detention Facility on the following charges:
- Second Degree Assault
- Third Degree Assault
- Obstructing a Peace Officer
- Violation of a Protection Order
This is believed to be an isolated incident with no ongoing threat to the community. This incident is under investigation and there is no further information available.
