National Police Week 2025

Police News Posted on May 06, 2025

Communities across the United States will come together to honor and remember the law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice, as well as the family members, friends, and fellow officers they left behind.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and designated the calendar week in which it falls as National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress that same year, National Police Week pays special tribute to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty while serving and protecting others.

Since the first recorded death in 1786, more than 24,000 law enforcement officers in the United States have made the ultimate sacrifice, including five from local agencies: the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office, Colorado State Patrol, and Fruita Police Department.

To begin Police Week, the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office and the Grand Junction Police Department Honor Guards will hold a flag ceremony and vigil at the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office on Monday, May 12, 2025, at 8:00 a.m. to honor the fallen. Community members are invited to join Mesa County law enforcement in this solemn observance.

Official Proclamations:

On Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at 7:00 p.m. the City of Fruita will read an official proclamation, and the Grand Junction City Council will read an official proclamation during its meeting on Wednesday, May 7, at 5:30 p.m., formally honoring the dedication and sacrifice of law enforcement officers.

In further recognition of Police Week, on Tuesday morning, May 13, 2025, at 9:00 a.m., the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office will stand with the Mesa County Board of Commissioners at the Old County Courthouse to recognize the brave men and women of local law enforcement and all public safety professionals who work tirelessly to keep our community safe.

As we observe Police Week, we reflect on the courage, commitment, and ultimate sacrifices made by those who chose a life of service. Let us remember the fallen, support their families, and stand in gratitude for all who protect and serve.
