The driver of a motorized scooter that was involved in a traffic crash this afternoon has died.
Just after 4:00pm on Monday afternoon, the Grand Junction Regional Communication Center received calls to 9-1-1 reporting a crash involving a motorized scooter and a SUV in the area of 29 ½ Road and North Avenue. Witnesses stated that a white SUV struck another vehicle and the scooter and then left the area.
Officers and medical personnel responded to the scene and located the adult male driver of the scooter in the roadway. Despite lifesaving efforts by first responders, the man died at the scene of the crash. The Mesa County Coroner’s Office will be responsible for releasing the identity of the deceased after appropriate notifications are made. The driver of the other vehicle that was struck suffered non-life threatening injuries.
Thanks to witnesses who captured the description and plate number of the run vehicle, officers were able to share that information with law enforcement in the area, and the vehicle was quickly located, unoccupied, not far from the scene of the crash. Roads in the area remained closed for several hours.
Officers are pursuing leads and will continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, as well as the identification and location of the person who was driving the vehicle that left the scene of the crash.
