On 08/01/23, at approximately 6:00 AM, first responders with the Grand Junction Police Department and Grand Junction Fire Department responded to the area of North Avenue and Cannell Avenue for a hit and run involving a bicyclist. The cyclist was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and there is no update on his condition. Through investigation, officers and detectives with the Grand Junction Police Department were able to identify the driver of the hit and run. Juan Yanez-Melendez, age 20, was contacted in the 2700 block of Patterson Rd on a traffic stop and taken into custody. Yanez-Melendez was transported to the Mesa County Detention Facility where he was charged with the following:
- Failing to Stop/Remain at Scene of an Accident Involving Serious Bodily Injury
- Failing to Provide Information After an Accident Involving Serious Bodily Injury
- Failing to Notify Police of Accident
