The City Council enjoys acknowledging those who contribute to and enhance the quality of life in Grand Junction. Community members may request that the mayor present a proclamation or nominate exceptional community members who deserve special recognition.
Those selected to have the proclamation presented at a City Council meeting must identify someone to receive the proclamation or recognition. The Mayor will review and determine the eligibility of all requests as well as which will be presented in person and which will be mailed to the requesting organization or individual.
Recipients of a proclamation at a City Council meeting will have five minutes during public comment to thank Council and share information about the proclamation as well as any actions community members can take to provide support or recognition.
Please note, the Agenda Committee will make the final decision as to whether a proclamation is presented during a City Council meeting or printed for pickup or mailed to the requester.
Proclamation requests must be submitted no later than 30 days prior to the specific council meeting or event where the proclamation would be read.
Council meets on the first and third Wednesday of every month. This allows time for staff to review and process the proclamation and reach out for any clarification.
Proclamations and certificates will be retyped on official parchment-like paper, embossed with the city's seal, and signed by the mayor. If a proclamation is accepted as social in nature it will be mailed. Those selected for presentation at a Council meeting will be noted on the agenda and the recipient will be notified with an invitation to attend.
Any deviation from these provisions shall be considered on a case-by-case basis by the Mayor or designee. Any such consideration that results in an official proclamation or recognition shall not be considered a precedent for future actions. The Mayor's issuance of a proclamation does not constitute an endorsement.
