Licenses & Permits

Permits Issued by the Community Development Department

The Community Development Department issues the following permits and clearances. Please create an account and apply online using Community Development Self Service unless otherwise noted. If you need assistance using the online portal or have questions about permitting, please call the Community Development Department at 970-244-1430.

Banner Permits

Required for temporary signage, flags, balloons, and other special event displays.

Change of Use Permits

Change of use permits essentially change the use of the space and must meet requirements specified by that use. To apply, please contact the Community Development Department at 970-244-1430 or ComDev@gjcity.org

Driveway Permits

Required for the widening of an existing driveway or construction of a new driveway. Please call the Community Development Department at 970-244-1430.

Fence Permits

Required before putting up a new fence or replacing an existing fence.

Home Occupation Permits

Required to run a business out of a residence.

Mobile Food Vendors (Food Trucks)

A permit may be required for the operation of a Mobile Food Vendor, also known as a Food Truck, within the city. For more information, reference this Frequently Asked Questions document (PDF) or contact the Community Development Department at 970-244-1430 or ComDev@gjcity.org

Planning Clearances for Residential

Required for any new construction, including additions, garages, or storage sheds constructed on residential property.

Planning Clearances for Non-Residential

Planning Clearances for Non-Residential Interior Remodels may be applied for online using Community Development Self Service. For other Non-Residential Planning Clearance information and requirements, please contact the Community Development Department at 970-244-1430.

Short-Term Rental Permits

Required for vacation rentals 30 days or less. Please review the Short-Term Rental webpage and then apply for a permit online here

Sign Permits/Clearances

Must be applied for and issued to a licensed sign contractor.

Special Event Permit

Required if an event is open to the general public and will take place within normal vehicular or pedestrian traffic on a City public street, property, or right-of-way. Review the Special Event Permit webpage and apply for a permit online here

Temporary Use Permits

Required for short-term uses or special occasions. Complete the application (PDF) and return it to the Community Development via email at ComDev@gjcity.org

Permits & Licenses Issued Through Other City Departments

Industrial Pre-Treatment Permits

Required for Industrial uses as well as Commercial uses such as restaurants, vehicle service facilities, and machine shops. For more information contact the Wastewater Treatment Plant at 970-256-4180.

Liquor License

A liquor license is required to sell alcohol. For more information visit the Liquor License page and contact the City Clerk's Office at 970-244-1509.

Sales and Use Tax License

A sales tax license is needed to do business in the City of Grand Junction. For more information visit the Sales, Use, and Lodging Taxes page and contact the Sales Tax Division at 970-244-1521.

Business License

The City of Grand Junction does not issue business licenses. However, please confirm with the Sales Tax Division if a sales or use license is required for your business. Contact the Sales Tax Division at 970-244-1521.

Contractor's License

Building Permits

Required for most types of construction. For more information on how to obtain a Building Permit Contact Mesa County Building Department at 970-244-1631. Contact the Community Development Department at 970-244-1430 for Planning Clearance requirements.

Mesa County Health Department Licenses

Required for schools/daycares; body art/tattoo parlors; restaurants. For more information contact the Mesa County Health Department at 970-245-8900.
