Grand Junction, CO – At 7:12 a.m. today, the Grand Junction Fire Department (GJFD) and the Lower Valley Fire District (LVFD) responded to a call in the area of 2252 I ¼ Road to assist a horse that had fallen into a culvert and was unable to free itself.
Fire crews from both agencies quickly collaborated to develop a plan for a safe and effective rescue. A local veterinarian from Fruita arrived to sedate the horse, ensuring the animal’s safety and reducing stress during the operation. Firefighters worked carefully to secure a sling around the horse in preparation for its lift.
Several neighbors and community members stepped in to assist, providing essential heavy equipment. Additionally, a bystander contacted Legacy Sign and Neon, whose team responded with a crane that was instrumental in lifting the horse to safety.
After being freed, the horse was assessed by the veterinarian for injuries and is expected to make a full recovery.
The Grand Junction Fire Department extends its gratitude to all who contributed their time, expertise, and equipment to this successful rescue. This positive outcome highlights the strength of community collaboration and teamwork in moments of need.
