At 11:14 PM last night, the Grand Junction Fire Department was dispatched to a fire in a single-story residence on the 300 block of Lake Road. Dispatch stated that the occupant was evacuated with possible injuries and that four dogs and eight puppies were still inside. When crews arrived, they found the home on fire with smoke coming from all sides. The resident was medically evaluated and found not to be injured. Crews worked to completely extinguish the fire and search for dogs that were still inside the home. Four dogs were removed from the home and one adult dog was given oxygen. The eight puppies died due to smoke inhalation. There are no other known injuries. The origin and cause of the fire are under investigation.
Mesa County Sheriff’s Office responded to assist with traffic control and scene safety. The American Red Cross responded to assist one adult displaced by the fire and Mesa County Animal Control responded to further assist the surviving dogs.
