Grand Junction Fire Department will graduate 12 new firefighters today. As an all-hazards department, and the largest fire and EMS service between Salt Lake City and Denver, the skills they learned in fire academy reflect the wide variety of emergencies they will respond to in their careers. These new recruits completed a 20-week academy to learn firefighting, technical rescue, emergency medicine protocols, hazardous materials, and fire prevention. Today, their hard work will pay off as the recruits become firefighters. The graduation will be live-streamed on the GJFD Facebook page and can be viewed there.
These 12 new recruits will begin their career inside the firehouse starting next week. While their training provides a foundation for all-hazards service, the new firefighters will spend the next year to year-and-a-half of their career working with their assigned crews to build expertise and excellence as they perfect and apply the skills they have learned throughout the academy.
