Electric bicycles, or e-bikes, are bicycles or tricycles with functional pedals, where an electric motor provides some level of assistance to the rider. Per Colorado Revised Statute, e-Bikes are classified by the type and speed of electric assist they provide.
- Class I: An electric bicycle that only provides assistance when the rider is pedaling; the motor ceases at 20 miles per hour (mph).
- Class II: An electric bicycle that provides assistance regardless of whether the rider is pedaling; the motor ceases at 20 mph.
- Class III: An electric bicycle that provides assistance only when the rider is pedaling; the motor ceases at 28 mph.
Class I and Class II e-bikes may be ridden in most locations where conventional (acoustic) bicycles are allowed. It is recommended that riders use bike lanes when they are available and safe.
