Grand Junction Police Department makes an arrest in North Ave. shooting incident.

Officers with the Grand Junction Police Department responded to a report that someone had been shot near the 2000 block of North Ave. at approximately 1:15 p.m. on 4/25/2024. Officers spoke with several witnesses who reported seeing a male shoot a gun at another male. The victim ran from the scene and later located and found to be uninjured. The shooter then ran into a nearby apartment.  Officers attempted to contact the suspect, but he was uncooperative.   North Ave. between 19th and 23rd Streets was closed while officers continued to attempt contact with the suspect.  GJPD SWAT responded to assist.  GJPD crisis negotiators were able to speak with the suspect and he eventually came out and was taken into custody without further incident. Anthony Javalera (33) was arrested and remanded to the Mesa County Detention Facility on the following charges:

  • Attempted First Degree Assault
  • Felony Menacing
  • Reckless Endangerment
  • Theft (Possessing a Stolen Firearm)
  • Possession of a Weapon by A Previous Offender
  • Prohibited Use of a Weapon
  • Tampering with Physical Evidence
  • Obstructing a Peace Officer

The Grand Junction Police Department believes this to be an isolated incident and that there is no further danger to the community. Investigation into this incident is ongoing and no further information is available at this time.
