Holiday Safety Reminders from GJPD

Police News Posted on November 24, 2025 | Last Updated on November 24, 2025

The holiday season brings joy, celebration, and time with friends and family. It can also create opportunities for criminal activity. The Grand Junction Police Department is reminding community members to stay vigilant and take simple steps to protect themselves, their homes, and their holiday plans.

Package & Delivery Safety
 • Porch deliveries can attract thieves. Ask a trusted neighbor to collect your packages or consider having them delivered to a secure pickup location.

Make Your Home Appear Occupied & Limit Social Media Posts
 • If you’re traveling, use light timers, have mail picked up, and avoid leaving trash or newspapers outside. A home that looks unoccupied is more vulnerable.
 • Avoid posting real-time travel plans or location updates on social media.

Keep Gifts Out of Sight
 • Keep wrapped presents away from windows where they can be easily seen. Don’t give thieves the chance to “window shop.”

Dispose of Boxes Carefully
 • Break down boxes from high-value items and place them inside your trash or recycling containers. Leaving them on the curb can advertise what’s inside your home.

Secure Entry Points
 • Lock all doors and windows, including garage doors. Avoid hiding spare keys outside and consider using security cameras or other home security tools.

Watch for Scams
 • Holiday-related scams increase this time of year. Be cautious of unsolicited phone calls, texts, emails, and charity requests. Never share personal or financial information.
 • Monitor your bank and credit card accounts regularly for unauthorized transactions.
 • Be wary of phishing scams disguised as shipping updates, charity appeals, or account alerts.

Stay Alert While Shopping
 • Keep your wallet or purse secure, park in well-lit areas, remain aware of your surroundings, and always lock your vehicle.

The Grand Junction Police Department wants to ensure our community enjoys a safe, peaceful, and joyful holiday season. By taking a few simple precautions, we can help make this time of year merry, bright, and incident-free for everyone.
