The City of Grand Junction has completed the new LED light installation on the existing 12 tennis courts at Canyon View Park. Tennis enthusiasts will now have more playing time in the evenings throughout the year. The courts will be open for the public until 9 p.m. starting this Saturday, January 21, 2023.
The Tennis and Pickleball expansion project was undertaken by the city in close partnership with tennis and pickleball communities. Now that the first step of the project with the installation of the LED lights at Canyon View is complete, the next step will proceed with retrofitting the lights over the courts at Lincoln Park to LED. The LED lighting at the tennis and pickleball courts at both sites meets International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) standards, which minimizes light pollution.
After the lights, four new tennis courts will be constructed at Canyon View. The final step in the expansion project is the conversion of the existing four tennis courts at Lincoln Park to dedicated pickleball courts. Once the project is complete, there will be 16 tennis courts at Canyon View Park with 12 lit by LED lights, and all 20 pickleball courts at Lincoln Park lit by LED lights.
The expansion project is expected to be complete in the fall of 2023. The total project cost is approximately $2 million and is funded in part by contributions from the tennis and pickleball communities.
The tennis and pickleball expansion project is one of the priorities outlined in the Parks, Recreation, and Open Space (PROS) Master Plan for the parks and recreation system. The PROS Master Plan includes projects to be completed over the next several years. More information about the PROS Master Plan.
