[ARCHIVED] Grand Junction Begins Tennis and Pickleball Court Expansion

Pickleball Court Expansion

The City has been working in close partnership with tennis and pickleball players to create a plan to install LED lights at the existing 12 tennis courts, construct four new tennis courts at Canyon View as well as increase the number of pickleball courts at Lincoln Park, which will also have LED lights. The number of tennis courts at Canyon View will increase to a total of 16. The four tennis courts at Lincoln Park will be converted to 12 dedicated pickleball courts. This increases the total number of pickleball courts at Lincoln Park to 20. The LED lighting at the tennis and pickleball courts at both sites meets International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) standards.

During light installation, the 12 existing tennis courts at Canyon View will be on a rotating closure for six weeks from October 17 - November 27, 2022. Court closure signage will notify visitors which courts are available for use. On some occasions, all 12 courts will be closed for construction.

“We are grateful to continue to impact the quality of life in a positive way for residents who enjoy the use of outdoors tennis and pickleball courts,” stated Ken Sherbenou, Parks & Recreation Director. “These much needed improvements would not be possible without the engaged and passionate leadership from members of our tennis and pickleball communities.”

Drilling, crane usage, trenching and boring work will be scheduled for the most convenient timeframes to minimize interruption to this popular facility. Due to the nature of the work and the size of the equipment, the courts will undergo full and partial intermittent closures. While installation takes place, community members may also use the tennis courts located at Lincoln Park, Pine Ridge and in other locations within Grand Junction.

Following the LED light installation this fall, four new tennis courts will be built at Canyon View. The final step will be for crews to shift over to Lincoln to complete the conversion of the existing four tennis courts to dedicated pickleball courts. All steps in this tennis and pickleball expansion project are expected to be complete in the middle of 2023. The total project cost is approximately $2,000,000.

The tennis and pickleball expansion project is a priority in the Parks, Recreation, and Open Space (PROS) Master Plan. The PROS Master Plan outlines top priorities for the parks and recreation system as well as projects to be completed over the next several years. More information about the PROS Master Plan may be found on the City's PROS webpage
