Grand Junction Parks and Recreation is excited to announce a new special event, Water Lights at Night on October 15, 2022, from 5:30 – 8 p.m. at the Butterfly Pond at Las Colonias Park. Admission is free. Attendees can purchase a lantern online for decorating prior to the event for $6 in addition to enjoying live music and a meal purchased from a variety of food trucks. Lanterns ordered online will be available for pick up at the event. Lanterns will also be available for purchase at the event for $8. Lanterns will be launched by the Butterfly Pond at approximately 6:45 p.m.
“Water lanterns have been used in many different cultures for thousands of years and their meaning can be a very personal one,” stated Ken Sherbenou, Parks and Recreation director. “Grand Junction Parks and Recreation is hoping this event brings the community together for good food and the company of neighbors, friends, and family.”
Lanterns purchased online prior to the event are $6 each and the kit includes the paper lantern, an LED-powered tea light, and a marker. Attendees can also purchase six lantern kits for $30. Lantern kits will be available for pick-up on the evening of the event. Lanterns purchased the night of the event are $8 each. Attendance to the Water Lights at Night event is free. Additional details can be found on the City's website.
Sunset will be at 6:35 p.m. and the lanterns will be launched shortly after that. City staff will retrieve the lanterns and no trash will be left in the pond. Attendees are welcome to retrieve lanterns to take home if they can be located after they are launched. Once launched, there is no guarantee owners will be reunited with their specific lantern. The LED lights in the lanterns will be retrieved by staff for reuse. Food trucks will be onsite; however, attendees are welcome to pack a picnic and bring chairs and blankets.
