The Westlake Skate Park will be closed from Saturday, April 26 through Friday, April 29 for mural painting as part of the annual Skate Park Mural Program. On April 30, the park will reopen, and the City of Grand Junction invites community members to the Skate & Mural Jam on April 30, beginning at 9 a.m.
The Skate Park Mural Program is designed to transform skate parks into vibrant, colorful artistic spaces that enhance the park amenities, improve the artistic experience for users and encourage a more inclusive environment. These murals are redesigned annually to bring fresh designs to the skate parks. The program is spearheaded by the City of Grand Junction in partnership with the local skate community.
Artist applications were accepted throughout the month of March and the local skate community chose 17 artists to paint a total of 23 available spaces at Westlake Skate Park. While the park will be closed to users from April 26 through April 29, the community is invited to come out and watch as the murals are painted by the artists.
Programs like this carry tremendous community benefits, including positive impacts on tourism and economic development, by enhancing skate park amenities into desirable, artistically vibrant spaces. These spaces draw community members and visitors to the area and surrounding businesses. Investment in mural art has been shown to decrease vandalism, encourage economic growth, and expand public art programs.
