First Open Space Park in Grand Junction Now Open

Kindred Reserve Open Space

The City of Grand Junction recently finished the development of the first open space park in Grand Junction. Kindred Reserve Open Space is located at 2064 S. Broadway next to the Tiara Rado Golf Course Driving Range. This park has a natural feel with 1.75 miles of soft-surface trails, views of the National Monument, Bookcliffs, and the Grand Mesa. This park provides a natural space that the community can enjoy while also preserving habitat in the area. The park is a unique location for users to enjoy nature by walking, running, and wildlife viewing.

The City of Grand Junction has developed more outdoor recreation amenities in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Kindred Reserve Open Space was developed as a result of community engagement and input on the types of amenities desired in the community. Input was collected virtually through the City’s online engagement platform, gjspeaks.org. Resident’s feedback was the driving force in the development of this park. Parks & Recreation crews began the development of Kindred Reserve in October 2020 and completed the trail work by the end of the 2020.

Kindred Reserve’s development was completed using the skills and knowledge of City employees. From trail building to designing custom made signage, Kindred Reserve showcases the innovation and skill sets of City of Grand Junction staff. The Kindred Reserve sign was designed in-house and made from a repurposed honey locust tree that had to be removed for safety. Approximately 1,700 feet of fencing on the southern border of the property was designed, produced and installed by City employees as well. The fencing has a unique style designed to fit the overall feel of the open space park.

The name Kindred Reserve was chosen for its meaning and representation of the park. The word kindred has strong ties to the notion of community, which ties to the concept of a natural space that was developed with the community in mind.

The City of Grand Junction is excited to add this unique space to the parks and recreation system. For more information on Kindred Reserve and to view a map of the property visit gjparksandrec.org.
