[ARCHIVED] Parks & Recreation Horticulture Division Saves by Growing Spring Flowers

Seedling

The Horticulture Division of the Grand Junction Parks & Recreation Department is currently growing 10,000 plants for use throughout the City during the upcoming planting season. These annuals and perennials highlight the unique growing climate in Grand Junction, and residents will be able to enjoy these beautiful flowers in many locations including Downtown Grand Junction.

The Division grows the majority of the plants it needs using a growing facility instead of purchasing all plants from a commercial supplier. Last year, the division grew approximately 1,800 plants with staff resources. This year, the City is renting out 600 square feet of growing space from Grow Fresh Aquaponic Farms, and the Division has the capacity to grow 10,000 plants. The ability to grow plants in-house is less expensive than purchasing from the commercial suppliers and the Division saves approximately half of the previous year’s budget. This process allows the Division to grow plants that are seldom available for purchase but thrive in Grand Junction’s climate.

The growing process starts in September with the preparation of seeds. Depending on the plant, the duration of time required for growth varies. Generally, all perennials are planted between April and June and all annual flowers are planted after the dangers of frost have passed, usually by the middle of May. This cost-saving innovation allows the City of Grand Junction to provide better services for the community.
