The City of Grand Junction, the Urban Trails Committee, and the Commission on Arts and Culture have announced a call for artists interested in creating unique, vibrant murals and functional sculptures such as bike racks and benches for the 4th and 5th Street Pilot Project between Grand Avenue and Colorado Avenue. The deadline to submit mural proposals is Friday, August 23, 2024, at noon and the deadline to submit functional sculpture proposals is Tuesday, September 17, 2024. Detailed information about submitting a proposal
Three designated areas along 4th and 5th Streets will host a total of four murals. Submissions for mural artwork should be geometric, colorful, and bright in design, incorporating abstract landscapes or conceptual ideas. Inspiration can be pulled from Paint the Streets in Cincinnati and the nationwide Bloomberg Asphalt Art program. Two designated areas along 4th and 5th Streets will host sculptures. Designs for sculptures should include unique and playful bike racks and benches. The Commission on Arts and Culture, members of the Urban Trails Committee, and city staff will select the artists to complete the project.
The call for artists on the corridors comes as part of the 4th and 5th Street Pilot Project which is designed to reduce speeds for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians. The first phase of the project is underway and community members can provide feedback on EngageGJ.org.
