Mid-Morning House Fire Displaces Family

mid-morning house fire

At 10:09 AM The Grand Junction Fire Department responded to reports of a residential structure fire in the 500 block of Centennial Road.  Initial dispatch reported a single-family home on fire. Upon arrival, units found a heavily involved mobile home with smoke and flames on the back side of the residence and smoke coming from inside. Engine 2 arrived on scene to find heavy fire activity inside with all residents evacuated. With reports of animals inside, fire crews made an initial fire attack and searched the home for animals. No persons were hurt in the fire; several dogs and cats were rescued, some with injuries. The fire was under control and extinguished without incident at 10:57 AM. Three cats were found alive after the fire was out; they survived because bedroom doors were closed, and smoke and fire were unable to breach the door. Multiple dogs, cats and other animals perished in the fire.  The home sustained major damage and is considered a total loss.

GJFD responded with Truck 1, Engine 2, Engine 4, Engine 5, Engine 6, Ambulance 11, a Battalion Chief, an Administrative Chief, and an investigator. Mesa County Sheriff’s Office assisted with traffic control and scene safety. Mesa County Animal Control responded for assistance with multiple animals. Red Cross and Mesa County Victim Advocates arrived to assist with displaced family. Four adults and several dogs and cats are displaced.
