Grand Junction, CO – In January 2025, the Grand Junction Police Department (GJPD) assumed responsibility for animal control services within city limits following a restructuring of Mesa County Animal Services operations.

In preparation for this transition, GJPD began building its Animal Control Unit in late summer 2024. This effort included acquiring specialized equipment and vehicles, developing operational policies and procedures, and staffing the unit to meet the needs of the community. The GJPD Animal Control Unit officially launched on January 1, 2025, and has been actively serving the City of Grand Junction ever since.

Three GJPD Animal Control SpecialistsInitially supported by two department team members with prior local animal services experience, the unit has grown to four full-time Animal Control Specialists. To further enhance response capabilities, the City of Grand Junction also added a second specialized animal control vehicle dedicated to animal-related calls for service.

The GJPD Animal Control Unit handles a wide range of calls, including lost pets, animal rescues, aggressive animals, welfare checks, and other animal-related concerns. In 2025, the unit responded to nearly 5,200 animal calls for service, collected over 700 animals, and successfully reunited close to 400 animals with their owners.

The success of the GJPD Animal Control Unit is supported through strong collaboration and partnerships across the community. GJPD works closely with Mesa County Animal Services, Roice Hurst Humane Society, Grand Rivers Humane Society, as well as local veterinarians and boarding facilities to ensure animals receive appropriate care, medical attention, shelter, and placement when needed. These partnerships play a critical role in providing comprehensive and compassionate animal services throughout the city.

The Grand Junction Police Department remains committed to public safety, community engagement, and animal welfare. Through the continued work of the Animal Control Unit, GJPD is strengthening safety and accountability for pets throughout the city, while focusing on education, excellent customer service, and the reunification of lost animals with their families.
