[ARCHIVED] The Orchard Mesa Pool Will Reopen Saturday, June 21

Orchard Mesa Pool- Update

The Orchard Mesa Pool Will Reopen Saturday, June 21

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo., June 20, 2025 – The Orchard Mesa Pool will reopen to the public on Saturday, June 21, following the installation of a long-awaited boiler replacement. Normal hours will resume, which are 1:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The new boiler arrived late last week and was successfully installed this week. Since then, water temperatures have steadily increased to safe and comfortable levels, allowing the facility to resume operations just in time for residents seeking relief from the summer heat.

The pool boiler was deemed unrepairable at the end of March after several attempts to repair it. Staff rushed through a sole source justification to order the new boiler on April 3. The supplier initially promised a lead time of 2-3 weeks, and the City projected a reopening date of late April or early May. The supplier then pushed that date back to June 1. On May 21, the supplier informed the City of another delay with a new date of June 16. This new date was met.

“We appreciate the patience of Orchard Mesa Pool patrons as City staff diligently worked through challenges to get the pool back up and running,” said Parks and Recreation Director Ken Sherbenou. “The facility is dated and issues like this are not unexpected. With summer in full swing, this will be a welcome asset to return to operation.”

During the closure period, swim lessons originally scheduled at Orchard Mesa Pool were transferred over to Lincoln Park. Learn to swim lessons currently in process will continue at Lincoln Park. The next session of Orchard Mesa Pool swim lessons will begin at the Orchard Mesa Pool on July 8.  Lessons occurred during open swim, which will be the situation in the five pools at the Community Recreation Center set to open in late 2026.

The Orchard Mesa Pool is located at 2736 Unaweep Ave. It was built in 1983 through a three-way partnership between Mesa County, the City and School District 51, who owns the land and the building. Mesa County is no longer a partner. The School District continues to own the building and land and the City operates the facility.
