Today, the City of Grand Junction opened the new tennis courts at Canyon View. These four, new post-tension tennis courts make up a total 16-court tennis complex on the east side of Canyon View Park at 728 24 Road. While the new courts will open for play on Monday, February 19, 2024, a separate ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the completion of the complex will be held on Thursday, March 28 at 3 p.m.
Improving the tennis complex is a part of the larger tennis and pickleball expansion project funded largely by the city with contributions from both the tennis and pickleball communities. The completion of this portion of the project with 16 tennis courts, also includes the lighting of the existing 12 courts with LED lights. The new tennis courts replace those at Lincoln Park that have now been converted to 12 pickleball courts. That brings the total to 20 dedicated pickleball courts. The Lincoln Park Pickleball complex is also now lit with new LED lights. Lights at both complexes extend playing time, which increases service to a large and growing community of enthusiasts for both racquet sports. The final component of the project at Canyon View is installing landscaping around the courts, which will be completed this spring.
The tennis and pickleball expansion project is one of the many priorities outlined in the Parks, Recreation, and Open Space (PROS) Master Plan for the parks and recreation system. The PROS Master Plan includes priority projects totaling $157M to be pursued over the next several years.
