During the week of January 29, 2024, the City of Grand Junction will begin replacing various sections of the City’s water distribution pipelines located on Ute and Pitkin Avenues (I-70B) from 1st Street to 4th Street. Approximately 2,900 feet of main line pipe and 670 feet of service lines will be installed. This project will include construction of a new 8-inch diameter waterline on 2nd Street in advance of pedestrian connectivity improvements in downtown. The project will also remove more than 3,300 feet of existing water pipe as required by the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT).

CDOT will be reconstructing I-70B from Rood Avenue to approximately 3rd Street later in 2024 and the city is replacing the water infrastructure in advance of this significant investment in the corridor.

The existing waterlines consist of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe materials. The city has repaired a number of fittings and replaced numerous waterlines along these corridors but has continued to have issues with fittings on the water mains that will be addressed with this replacement project. The City of Grand Junction has contracted with Dirtworks Construction to replace the waterlines at a cost of $1,779,908.94. This project is included in the 2024 Adopted Budget for the Water Fund.
