Julie Glassman Julie Glassman Fine Art Jewelry Phone: 970-464-4843
Link: Julie Glassman Website | As a girl there were few things I loved more than running my fingers through vintage necklaces passed down from my loving grandmothers. Things that shimmered and sparkled always caught my eye. As I grew, I began disassembling them and making my own creations. When I was fourteen, I took my first metal smithing class, and with one ignition of a blowtorch I had found my path in life. After high school, I attended the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan and graduated with a degree in jewelry and gems. After college, I mastered the technique of cloisonné enamel and developed my signature medium of miniature paintings created from layers of high fired glass framed in precious metal settings. One of my first creations was an evil eye pendant. Twenty-five years later, my evil eyes remain one of my most popular (and imitated) lines, recognized nationally and internationally, along with my other designs. |

| As a multi-media artist, there are times the media or material inspire my ideas. Also inspired by nature, it is life cycles such as birth, death, and transition that I find most fascinating. A caterpillar's metamorphosis into a butterfly or fertilized eggs growth into a complex animal are just two manifestations of life cycles that stimulate my work. Clay is one of my favorite materials to work with because with it I’m able to physically represent my ideas, in addition to being fun and calming to work with. My favorite tool is a metal scraper with teeth. This tool becomes an extension of my hand that I can use to smooth, shape, cut, scrape, roughen, score, and burnish the clay. Many patterns emerge in my work. Most recently, the theme has been life and light within a subject. I really enjoy working with light, whether contained in or glowing from a piece. I use light as a visual element in some pieces, while intending it to be symbolic of life or energy in other pieces. |

A life-long love of the art of jewelry blends with scientific curiosity into an 'alchemy of adornment' While the ancients sought to use the alchemic arts and sciences to turn lead into gold, Sandra turns simple components into complex wearable treasures. |
