Deputy Chief Matt Smith joined the Grand Junction Police Department in 1999 after beginning his law enforcement career at the Cortez Police Department. Deputy Chief Smith is a veteran of the United States Navy and has experience working in or supervising many of the units in our department to include patrol, narcotics, community resource, school resource, professional standards, firearms, SWAT, reality based training, and patrol tactics.
Deputy Chief Smith is a member of the Colorado Associations of Chiefs of Police, the Police Executive Research Forum, the International Association of Chiefs of Police, and the FBI National Academy Associates. Deputy Chief Smith holds a Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice from Colorado Technical University, and is a graduate of the 271st Session of the FBI National Academy and the 58th session of the Police Executive Research Forums, Senior Management Institute for Police.
Deputy Chief Smith currently serves at the Deputy Chief of Operations for the Grand Junction Police Department, and oversees our patrol division, including our Community Resource Units, our Colorado Mesa University substation, our School Resource Officers, and our Special Investigations Unit.
