Police Officer Training
All officers must be certified through the State of Colorado’s Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Board.
In order to maintain proficiency, the Grand Junction Police Department requires officers to successfully complete in-service training covering a wide range of topics from firearms training to defense tactics, from community policing to use of force issues. Changing professional standards, improved technology and new court decisions also necessitate continual training.
Training programs exist to enhance our employee’s ability to safely and efficiently perform their job duties, and to ensure that Department goals, objectives, policies and procedures are adhered to. New officer recruits go through a 14 week Field Training program to learn the skills a competent police officer must possess. At the end of the training, the new recruit will be able to successfully demonstrate proficiency as a solo police officer.
