Children will be walking and bicycling to school.

DRIVERS…Exercise extra caution on all roads. Children will be on their bikes and waking, not only to and from school but also after school in their neighborhoods. They will be standing on corners waiting for a bus.

PARENTS… Decide on an appropriate route for your child to and from school. Once you have decided on a route, review the route with your child and walk or bicycle with your child on the chosen route. Be sure to review bicycling and walking safety rules and provide reflective gear.

DISTRACTIONS…As with drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists can be distracted by cell phones, music players, etc. Please talk to your child about these distractions and also do not be distracted by these devices while driving.

Parents: Most children are not ready to cross a street alone until age 10. However, children vary in their developmental readiness to make decisions about where and when to walk or bicycle and cross a street. You are the best judge of when your child is ready to walk or bicycle without an adult.
