Hydrant Flushing
W hy do we flush fire hydrants every spring?
  • Maintain the life of the mains.
  • Eliminate poor taste and odors.
  • Remove accumulated sediment.
  • Remove discolored water.
  • Increase chlorine residuals to the extremities of the system.
  • Remove impurities associated with new and repaired mains.
  • Check the operation of the hydrant and verify actual fire flows.
Why are the fire hydrants painted different colors?
The hydrants are painted with a base color of yellow and then the caps and top of each hydrant are painted a color corresponding to flows available from each hydrant.

Blue Caps = 1500+gallons per minute
Green Caps = 1000-1500 gallons per minute
Orange Caps = 500-1000 gallons per minute
Red Caps = less than 500 gallons per minute

All RED fire hydrants are private hydrants -
property owners are responsible for operation and maintenance.
