Intersection turning movement counts are typically used by
Engineers to analyze traffic flows at intersections. Engineers
use this information to find the Level of Service and determine
how the intersection operates under different traffic conditions.
The Level of Service is just one of the tools used to determine
what type of improvements can be made to the roadway or intersection.
Types of improvements may include addition of turn lanes,
dual turn lanes (dual lefts, dual rights), additional through
lanes, new signal timing or new signal phasing.
A typical turning movement count will include AM (7am to 9am),
Noon (11am to 1pm) and PM (4pm to 6pm) peak counts. Not all
of the available turning movement counts have all three peaks.
Note: In order to view the turning count files, you
must have Acrobat Reader. If you don't have it installed on
your computer, click here
to download it for free.
You may also access any available signal timing data for
each intersection. Just click on the specific intersection
and the available information will be displayed in a text
file. The display will have AM, Noon, or off-peak, and PM
timing plans.
