2008 SCHEDULE
Sample Door Hanger
CHIPSEAL
Chipseal is a protective wearing surface that is placed
on a street to prolong its service life. A thin layer of new, small
rocks are spread over a fresh coat of asphalt, also referred to
as oil. Over the top of the small rocks, a thin coat of asphalt
is sprayed to make the street surface "black" again. In
some instances, the Chipseal/Fogseal process is performed on pavement
that is relatively new as a protective coating. In such cases,
this process will add 5 - 7 years to the life of a street and will
provide a safe, skid-resistant surface.
FOGSEAL
Approximately
7 - 10 days following the chipseal, a fogseal will be applied. Fogseal
is a thinner viscosity asphalt that is applied to help set the rock
and control fly-rock and dust. Once Fogseal has been applied, the
roads will be returned to service within the next 1-6* hours . This
time span is greatly dependent upon time of day, weather, wind and
humidity. During this time, it is imperative that after driving
on a street that has been fogged, the car is NOT driven onto
any concrete. The oil on the street will track onto sidewalks, driveways
or any concrete surface. Be aware that any contact with the oil
could result in tracking - leaving
stains on carpeting and floors. Contact with oil that is not completely
cured should be avoided. Even though the road has been returned
to service, in many instances, the fogseal may not yet be completely
cured , meaning a thin asphalt film will adhere to the
contacting surface of the soles of shoes, tires, feet, paws
of pets, etc. This condition, also known as tracking, may continue
to be present for up to 24 hours after the process is completed.
An increasing number of pets in the last few years have come in
contact with the oil used in these processes. Please be advised
that oil used in this process is usually heated to approximately
200° F and could endanger pets by burns to feet or paws.
In
preparation of Chipseal and Fogseal work, Street sweepers will sweep
the area thoroughly. Sweeping operations may begin as early as 3:00 A.M. Work
crews will be in the area between 6:00 A.M. and as late as 5:00
P.M.
Striping will be done on streets that are designated to be striped
by the City of Grand Junction Transportation Engineering Department.
While passable, traffic will be impaired in the work area.
Motorists can expect delays that may be as
high as 30 minutes. It is strongly recommend that you allow yourself
additional time to get to appointments and other commitments.
Please consider alternate parking arrangements. NO PARKING
is allowed on the street while workers are laying chips or fogging. Any vehicle parked in the street at the time work is scheduled to
begin will be towed from the immediate work area at the owners expense.
In the event of bad weather, equipment failure or other unforeseen
occurrence, work may be postponed and re-scheduled. Notification will be given to those affected residents as to the next
possible work day in your area.
