| Overview
of the Solid Waste Department |
| The City of Grand Junction
Solid Waste Department provides automated refuse collection
to all residential customers of less than eight units
in the City of Grand Junction, as of April 19, 1994. Commercial refuse collection is also available for
commercial customers requesting our service. In providing
commercial service, we compete with the private sector
(Waste Management, Monument Refuse Service, Rocky
Mountain Sanitation). We also provide curbside recycling,
baling, and marketing of recyclables. This service
is provided through a contract with Curbside Recycling
Indefinitely (CRI). The Solid Waste Department has seven Specialty
Equipment Operators whose purpose is to provide residential
refuse collection and container delivery (11,353 customers).
Three Specialty Equipment Operators handle the commercial
customers (724 customers). One Crew Leader handles repairs,
deliveries, etc. There is one Supervisor and one Superintendent.
The City of Grand Junction Solid Waste Department is
a utility enterprise funded with a minimum fund balance
of 15% of annual operating expenses. Rates and rate
changes are established by City Resolution. The fund's
existence is to provide quality refuse collection to
the citizens of the community at a fair price. |
| Trash
Service Offered to Annexed Neighborhoods |
| On August 1, 2002,
the City began offering its automated, volume-based
trash service to neighborhoods that have been annexed
to the City since 1994. This change, which was initiated
by citizen request, will provide an opportunity for
all City residents to enjoy the same service as other
residents of the City. However, residents will have
the opportunity to choose keeping the private hauler
they have or requesting the City's automated service.
The City Solid Waste Department will be looking at requests
to provide service based on all or a portion of a neighborhood
or subdivision being large enough to make economic sense
to serve. If you would like more information, or would
like to have the City as a trash provider in your neighborhood,
please call the City Solid Waste Department at (970)
244-1570. |

Hints For Your Trash & Garbage Collection: |
- Toter containers are furnished to residents for trash
pick up
- Billing is based on size and number of containers
used
- Toter containers are property of the Solid Waste
Department and assigned to specific addresses
- All refuse, brush and yard waste collected must be
placed inside the Toter container with the lid closed - if the lid does not close, spillage may occur due
to the container being overfilled
- Please keep limbs and brush to a maximum of one foot.
- Hot ashes or coals are not acceptable - they cause
damage to containers and collection equipment - ashes
must be cold and stored in plastic bags
- Containers must be placed out at the point of pick
up by 7:00 a.m. on your trash collection day
- Regular collection schedule for residential garbage
is Monday through Friday - the only exception, if a
major holiday falls during that week.
- Containers need to be placed with no less than three
feet clearance from any object or another container
- Containers need to be placed at a designated
location on trash collection day
- Place containers with the serial number facing
the street or alley - Solid Waste operators will leave
notices on containers to assist you when problems
arise.
