29 Road and I-70B Interchange

General Information
September 2008

29 Road and I-70B Interchange is a key component in the transformation of the 29 Road corridor into a major link in the transportation network. This project proposes to construct a viaduct to extend 29 Road over the Union Pacific Railroad tracks and I-70B. This overpass is part of the 29 Road corridor improvements that will eventually connect Highway 50 with Interstate 70. The project is being jointly funded by the City of Grand Junction and Mesa County.

The project will construct 4,800 feet of 29 Road mainline extending from D Road to North Avenue and will include a connection to provide access between I-70B and 29 Road. The mainline bridge that will span the UPRR tracks and I-70B will be approximately 800 feet long (about the same length as the 29 Road bridge over the river).

The 29 Road street section will be 5-lanes wide
(4 travel lanes and a center turn lane), and will include bike lanes, and attached concrete sidewalks.

Current Status - The CDOT 1601 Interchange Approval process has been completed. The City has hired the consulting engineering firm of Jacobs Engineering of Denver Colorado to complete the final design, and the consulting firm of Transportation Resource Services to coordinate the right-of-way and easement acquisition process.

The City and County are currently working on the purchase of necessary right-of-way and easements in each of their respective jurisdictions. The goal is to have right-of-way and easement acquisitions completed by fall 2008. Utility relocations will begin in late fall of 2008. Construction of the roadwork will begin the spring of 2009. The structure is anticipated to be open in 2010.

29 Road and I-70B Final Finding No Significant Impact (FONSI)

FONSI summarizes the alternatives considered and documents the reasons for the selected alternative. The approval of the FONSI is based on CDOT's acceptance of the information presented in the Environmental Assessment, which indicates that the selected alternative will have no significant impact on the environment. The approval is also based on public input received throughout the 29 Road and I-70B planning process.
