What is the 29 Road Corridor? - 29 Road corridor is a principal arterial that will eventually extend from I-70 on the north to Hwy 50 on the south.

  • The 29 Road and I-70B is the seventh phase of the development of this transportation corridor.
  • The potential intersection of 29 Road and I-70B is being studied as part of the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) Interchange Approval Process.

What is the Interchange Approval Process? - CDOT Policy Directive 1601 establishes consistent guidelines for the review and evaluation of requests for new interchanges and major improvements to existing interchanges on major state highways. Many of the alternatives being considered for the connection of 29 Road and I-70B include an interchange. The directive includes requirements for preparation of a feasibility study and an environmental study.

What is a Feasibility Study? - A Feasibility Study examines the traffic impacts of the proposed interchange or interchange improvement on the surrounding arterial roadway system and identifies all necessary improvements to accommodate the anticipated traffic.

The Feasibility Study must also consider alternate routes, accident history, potential economic development impacts, and present a broad evaluation of potential environmental impacts.

What is an Environmental Assessment (EA)? - An Environmental Assessment (EA) describes the purpose and need for the project and evaluates potential social, economic, and environmental impacts of the proposed improvements. The EA includes a description of a range of reasonable alternatives and a detailed description of potential impacts and measures to avoid or minimize negative impacts. It is not known at this time whether an EA will be required for this project. However if it is required, the City will prepare both the Feasibility Study and the EA for review and approval by CDOT. Interested agencies and the public must be involved in the development of the EA.

What is the Schedule for Completion of the Interchange Approval Process? - It is anticipated that the process for the I-70B and 29 Road connection will be complete in 2008 at which point a design consultant and right or way acquisition consultant will be hired to complete the design and help the City acquire the necessary right of way.

When will Construction Start? - It is anticipated that construction will begin in 2009 and continue through 2010.
