Wastewater Definitions

Aerobic = An enviroment or process that uses oxygen.

Anaerobic = An environment or process that uses no oxygen.

Bacteria = Bacteria are living organisms, which consist of a single cell.

Biosolids = Solids separated from liquids during wastewater treatment, also called sludge.

Combined sewer = A sewer designed to carry both sanitary and storm wastewater.

Composted biosolids = Biosolids that have been composted can be used by the public after it has met stringent quality control standards. This substance meets federal and state standards for beneficial use.

Disinfection = The process designed to kill most microorganisms in wastewater, including essentially all pathogenic (disease-causing) bacteria.

Effluent = The treated wastewater that is discharged back into the environment.

Influent = The wastewater that comes into the wastewater treatment facility after it has been contaminated by home and industrial uses.

Microorganisms

Very small organisms that can be seen only through a microscope. Some microorganisms use wastewater for food and thus remove or alter much of the undesirable matter.

Non-potable water = Water that is not for human comsumption.

NPDES Permit = National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System Permit is the regulatory agency document designed to contol all discharges to bodies of water.

Pathogens = Disease-causing organisms.

Potable Water = Water that is satisfactory for human consumption.

ppb = parts per billion, or micrograms per liter (approximately one minute in 2000 years.)

ppm = parts per million, or milligrans per liter (approximately one minute in two years).

Residual Chlorine = Chlorine remaining in water or wastewater after treatment.

Septic Tank = A settling tank in which organic solids are decomposed by anaerobic bacterial action.

Sewage Sludge = The solid, semi-solid, or liquid residue generated during the treatment of municipal sewage in a treatment plant.

Sludge Cake = The sludge that has been dewatered (water removed) by treatment process - more accurately called biosolids.

Sterilization = The complete destruction of microorganisms, including spores.

This report provides information on various parameters (metals, organics, etc.) on the Persigo Wastewater Treatment Facility's influent (raw sewage), effluent (treated water that is discharged into Persigo Wash) and biosolids
