ENVIRONMENTAL LABORATORY

Ensuring that the Persigo Wastewater Treatment Plant discharges effluent water that is in compliance with state and federal regulations is the number one goal of the City of Grand Junction's Environmental Laboratory. This goal is achieved through an intense quality control program that requires a well-equipped and highly trained staff of laboratory professionals.

In addition to monitoring the wastewater discharge, the Laboratory also analyzes samples for the City's Industrial Pretreatment Program and process control samples for wastewater operations.

What's New

The City of Grand Junction Environmental Laboratory Services Division is pleased to announce the Certification for Method 1623, Analyses of Cryptosporidium in Water under the Safe Drinking Water Act. Method 1623 which monitors for both protozoans, Cryptosporidium and Girardia, is extremely comples and laborious. The methold will allow the City to comply with the newly passed Long-Term 2 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule (LT2).

LT2 is a National Primary Drinking Water Regulations that requires all public water systems that surface water surces to monitor and report the incidence of Cryptosporidium. The rule was developed to improve the control of microbial pathogens in drinking water. Neither of these microbes has ever been found in City finished water; however, both organisms have been recovered in various Grand Mesa source waters.

New Equipment: The Environmental Laboratory has recently purchased a inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer. This new instutment will enable the Laboratories to reach lower dectection limits, analyze samples faster, and analyze more samples per year.

Also...

While driving around town, you may see lab personnel collecting water samples from the Colorado River and Persigo Wash. To determine the effect of the Persigo WWTF on Colorado waterways, the Environmental Laboratory has implemented a sampling plan. We will be monitoring parameters such as: pH, dissolved solids, cyanide, nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, turbidity, hardness, fecal coliforms, alkalinity and metal concentrations. Protecting the environment is our mission!

ANNUAL WASTEWATER QUALITY REPORT

The Environmental Laboratory is proud to present the
Wastewater Quality Report (click here to open the report)
for the year 2007. This report provides information on various parameters (metals, organics, etc.) on the Persigo Wastewater Treatment Facility's influent (raw sewage), effluent (treated water that is discharged into Persigo Wash).

DISCHARGE MONITORING

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Colorado Department of Public Health establishes discharge limits and monitoring requirements for municipal wastewater treatment facilities. These limits determine the amount of contaminants allowed to be present in a facility's effluent (the water that is discharged after sewage treatment). The limits are set to protect the current uses of the Colorado River: recreation, aquatic life and agriculture.

The Environmental Laboratory acts as an independent department and monitors the treated water for these limits. Currently, limits exist for such analyses as Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Solids (TSS), Disinfectant residual, pH, Fecal Coliforms and Oil & Grease.

WASTEWATER PROCESS CONTROL

The Environmental Laboratory also acts as support for the Wastewater Operations Division by providing analyses of process control samples. By analyzing samples from different points in the sewage treatment process, the laboratory provides information that operators use to enhance the treatment process.
