The Grand Junction Police Department’s Victim Advocacy Program (VAP) began in 1992. The Program serves all victims of crime regardless of ethnicity, religion, age, gender, financial or community standing. The program assists victims, witnesses and their family and friends who have experienced a traumatic incident.

Trained volunteers, known as VAPs, provide crisis intervention 24 hours per day, 7 days per week and will assist individuals through complex law enforcement and judicial system procedures. VAPs represent the Grand Junction Police Department’s Victim Advocacy Unit, and are required to attend 40 hours of academy training and monthly training meetings. Through continual training, these highly skilled advocates deal with crisis intervention, domestic violence, sexual assault, death notification, and coping with adults at risk and child abuse.

For more information about becoming a volunteer with the Grand Junction Police Department or joining the Victim Advocacy Program, call (970) 244-3580.
