The Patrol Section is the first line of defense against illegal
and unacceptable behavior and is often the public's initial point of
contact. The Patrol Section responds works with the community to find innovative ways to solve
problems as Officers strive to eliminate criminal
activity and deliver timely, courteous service.
Currently, the Patrol Section is comprised of 60
sworn Officers, 8 non-sworn Police Service Technicians
(PSTs), 11 Sergeants and 4 Commanders. Individual Officers may have collateral
duties such as K9, SWAT, Bomb Squad, and Forensic Crime Scene Processing.
There are special units that operate within the Patrol Section. There is a Street Crimes Unit (1 Sgt. and 4 Officers) that works with other local law enforcement agencies and citizens to interdict local drug dealing and related criminal activity. The Traffic Unit is responsible for enhancing traffic safety through concentrated traffic enforcement and accident investigation. This unit has a Sergeant, 8 officers, (6 of them assigned as motorcycle officers) and a Police Service Technician. We also provide policing services to Mesa State College with our college unit (Sgt. and 3 Officers).
Our Police Service Technicians handle “calls for service” that do not require a fully certified armed police officer. They take many of the initial crime, missing persons and runaway reports from the public. They process burglary and theft crime scenes, and deal with property recovery and abandoned vehicles among many other duties.
