GJFD's Fire Safety Education Programs

The Grand Junction Fire Department's mission to provide for the safety and welfare of the public is a main focus in the public education program. The public education program's mission is to reduce the burden of fire and other hazards in our community by providing and advocating education and training. Our programs are designed to teach both adults and children about fire safety and prevention in order to ensure a better of quality of life for our citizens.

Juvenile Firesetter's Program

The Grand Junction Fire Department recognizes that involvement of our local youth in fireplay and firesetting behavior is a significant community issue. Our Department offers a program in conjunction with the State of Colorado, Division of Fire Safety as well as the United States Fire Administration and the Federal Emergency Management Agency to address these issues. We assess each situation to identify the degree of fire behavior and interest. We then provide the appropriate level of fire safety education for the child. Additional intervention may also be necessary. This service is offered at no cost to residents of our Fire District. If you are concerned about your child's interest and involvement with fire, or if you are interested in finding out more about the intervention program or scheduling an appointment with an educator, please call 244-1400.

School Program

Each year during the months of September and October the Grand Junction Fire Department visits local pre-schools and elementary schools to spread the fire safety message to our community through it's children. Annually we contact over 5,000 children in grades pre-K through third grade. This year saw the debut of our first annual Fire Prevention Poster Contest, where all third grade students were given the opportunity to create a poster to describe the theme of "When Fire Strikes: Get Out, Stay Out!" Three winners were picked and awarded with a ride to and from school to Fire Station One for a pizza party and prizes. If you would like more information about scheduling a visit from the Grand Junction Fire Department for your school or education group, please call 970-244-1413.
