Physical Ability Test Description

Pre-Test Protocol: Candidates arrive and register. They must be wearing sweat pants, a long sleeve sweatshirt, and athletic shoes. Candidates will be asked to read through a description of the physical ability test.

Equipment: Candidates will put on a helmet and gloves supplied by the Grand Junction Fire Department that are to be worn throughout the test. Candidates will put on a weighted SCBA tank weighing approximately 41 pounds, simulating the weights of standard gear. Candidates will not be required to wear or breathe through a mask.

Events: All seven events are accomplished in order without stopping. Note: Running between events is not allowed. Test is pass/fail with a maximum allowable time of 7 minutes and 30 seconds.
 Stair Climb and Descent #1
The stopwatch will start when the candidate picks up the hose pack. At the bottom of the stairs, candidates will be required to pick up a 100-foot folded pack of 1 ½” hose weighing approximately 50 pounds, and carry it up three (3) flights of stairs. At the top of the stairs, candidates will wave through the window, then carry the hose pack back down the stairs, where they will place the hose pack back on the ground in its original position. During the climb and descent, candidates must take the steps one at a time and touch every step.

Hose Hoist
From the bottom of the hose tower, candidates will be required to hoist a roll of 2 ½” hose weighing approximately 50 pounds by pulling a rope hand over hand. When the hose roll reaches the third floor, the candidate will lower the hose roll back down to the ground hand over hand (without letting the rope slide through the hands). Once the hose roll reached the ground, candidates will be required to hoist and lower the hose roll again in the same manner.

  Force Machine
Candidates will be required to straddle the sled with their feet on the runners and use the sledgehammer to move the center block between their feet approximately five (5) feet from one end to the other.

 Stair Climb and Descent #2
At the bottom of the stairs, candidates will be required to pick up a 100-foot folded pack of 1 ½” hose weighing approximately 50 pounds, and carry it up three (3) flights of stairs. At the top of the stairs, candidates will wave through the window, then carry the hose pack back down the stairs, where they will place the hose pack back on the ground in its original position. During the climb and descent, candidates must take the steps one at a time and touch every step.

  Hose Drag

Candidates will be required to pick up a charged 1 ½ “ hose line at the nozzle and drag the hose line approximately 75 feet where they will place the nozzle on the ground in the marked area. Candidates will not be required to show water.

 Dummy Drag
Candidates will be required to lift and drag a 150-pound dummy approximately 150 feet. Candidates are not permitted to carry the dummy off of the ground.

 Monitor Simulation
Candidates will be required to attach six (6) leads (numbered 1 though 6) to their corresponding terminals on a board. The leads may be attached in any order. Once all of the leads have been successfully attached, the candidates will then disconnect the leads from the terminals. Once all of the leads have been disconnected, the candidate will attach the leads to the terminals a second time. Candidates should remove their gloves for this event. The stopwatch will stop when the Monitor Simulation is completed.
