Grand Junction Fire Dept.'s Specialty Teams

The relative isolation of our area, varying terrain, and increasing recreational activities of the public, require preparation for virtually any type of emergency. In pursuit of the City's goals of meeting the public need, expertise has been expanded to include specialized rescue. The Grand Junction Fire Department provides specialized teams, with specific training, to respond to these unique situations or events. They will respond as needed to assist other agencies under mutual aid agreements.

Hazardous Materials

The Grand Junction Fire Department's Hazardous Materials Response Team provides specialized personnel and equipment to incidents involving materials that present a physical, health, biological or radiological hazard to the public.

The Team is trained to identify the hazardous material and then implement control procedures, contain the hazardous material, and decontaminate the area. The Haz-Mat Team is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week and may be accessed by calling 911.

Below Ground/Trench Rescue & Confined Space

The most recent expansion of rescue services include the funding and formation of a confined space and trench collapse component. Team members are trained to handle trench collapses using various techniques and equipment, from using basic wood products to modern techniques such as employing hydraulic shoring devices.

Confined Spaces are defined as:

  • Those areas which are not intended for continual employee occupancy,
  • Have a limited means of egress, and
  • Have the potential for physical, chemical or atmospheric engulfment.

Hazardous Device Team

In 2001, the Hazardous Device Team, consisting of members of the Grand Junction Police Department and the Grand Junction Fire Department, became an addition to the hazardous materials emergency response capability. The Hazardous Device Team is responsible for rendering safe all explosives and improvised explosive devices.

Technical Rope, Water & Ice Teams

The Technical Rescue Team is made of Grand Junction Fire Department members and respond from fire Fire Station #1 and Fire Station #4 for high angle and low angle rescue as well as water and ice rescues.
