Thank you for visiting this site! As you may have heard, the City of Grand Junction is currently in the process of developing a comprehensive plan. The process began mid-year 2007 and is expected to be completed by mid-year 2009.
This Comprehensive Plan is being developed through an interactive community effort and will play an important role in guiding the future growth and development of the City of Grand Junction. For the Comprehensive Plan to be a useful and valuable resource, it is imperative that the public participate in this process. Without public participation, the City has no means of knowing what type and direction of growth is acceptable to residents. To that end, there are a number of public meetings scheduled as well as opinion surveys that will be compiled and incorporated in the Comprehensive Plan. Your input into the process is requested and valued.

Current News
Last Fall, we looked at how the region could adequately accommodate new growth while retaining a desirable quality of life. Given the public cost of spread out growth, the cost of land, and the cost of gas, the public told us that we need to change how we grow. We discussed community issues and values and have formulated some basic principles to guide future growth. This winter we shared these issues, values and emerging concepts with you and also provided information about Grand Junction (demographics, existing conditions, trends, etc.)
The next step was to merge all of the public input into four Growth Scenarios. These scenarios were presented at public meetings in July. Two sub-area plans were also completed, one for the area northwest of the City and one for Central Orchard Mesa. These plan processes allowed us to test ideas from the over-all valley-wide Comprehensive Plan process. The sub-area plans will be used as a guide for these two areas until the Comprehensive Plan is officially adopted. After considerable public input and discussion, a draft preferred alternative was developed and presented at two open houses in September. The Draft Preferred Alternative is a combination of the elements of the four previous alternative scenarios: Business as Usual, Big City Center, Town Center and Village Center Concepts. This Draft Alternative is a combination of growing a big downtown; establishing town centers and village centers scattered throughout the community, many around existing neighborhood centers, with no change or business as usual for everything else. What is a Comprehensive Plan?
A comprehensive plan is a tool to guide the constant change and evolution that every community faces. It is comparable to a contractor's blueprint. By outlining a vision for the community, and strategies for achieving that vision, a comprehensive plan acts as a foundation for any policies and actions a community wants to implement in the future. Comprehensive Plans usually address the following issues: the use of land, natural resources, transportation, economic development, housing, recreation and public facilities. And the comprehensive planning process typically involves three steps:
- understanding where we are now;
- deciding where we want to go;
- and choosing how we get from where we are now to where we want to go.

How can I become involved in the process?
Public involvement is a critical component of this Comprehensive Plan. There are many different ways for you to get involved to help shape the plan throughout the planning process. The main ways to become involved are:
Attend Community Events and Open Houses
A variety of events and open houses will be scheduled at key steps in the process as a means for broad public comment. These will range from "roll-up-the-sleeves" workshops, to smaller meetings with members of the project team and the public. Locations will vary and meetings will be announced in the newspaper as well as on this website under Upcoming Events.
