Grand
Junction has a pro-active weed abatement program from May through
October.
What Happens
City summer staff inspect each property in the City
for violations of weeds. Chapter 16 Article II of the Municipal
Code requires that weeds be kept shorter than 6 inches.
The City's new weed
abatement
mascot "The Weed Wrangler" introduces himself to City
Council.
Violation Notices
Violation Notices are issued to any property where weeds have
grown over six inches. Time allowed for voluntary compliance once
a notice is issued is seven calendar days.
All vacant properties over one acre are required to keep weeds
cut within 20 feet of any adjacent developed lot, tract or parcel
and within 40 feet of any adjacent roadway.
Properties are still responsible for maintaining public property
between their property lines and any street or curb and to the
center line of any adjacent alley. This includes between the sidewalk
and street.
If weeds remain after seven calendar days from
the date of the notice and if the City contractor cuts weeds on
your property, you will be charged for the time to cut at a current
rate of $60.00 per hour and an additional administrative penalty
of $50.00 plus a 25 percent processing charge. The penalty
increases if the City cuts weeds more than one time.
Weed bills are filed as special assessment tax
liens if not paid.

Noxious Weeds
The State of Colorado requires management for eradication
of Noxious weeds. Russian knapweed and Purple Loosestrife are the
two most common in Grand Junction and a management plan for eradication
is requested from the property owner. Visit
