Grand
Junction has a proactive weed abatement program from May through
October.
What Happens
The City's summer staff write weed violations both proactively and in response to citizen complaints. Chapter 16 Article II of the Municipal
Code requires that weeds be kept shorter than 6 inches.
The City's new weed
abatement
mascot "The Weed Wrangler" introduces himself to City
Council.
Violation Notices
In addition to the removal of weeds from the total area of your parcel, all property owners are responsible for maintaining public property
between their property lines and to any street or curb and to the
centerline of any adjacent alley. This includes between the sidewalk
and street.
All vacant properties over one acre are required to keep weeds
cut within 20 feet of any adjacent developed lot, tract or parcel
and within 40 feet of any adjacent roadway.
Violation notices are issued to any property where weeds have
grown over six inches. Time allowed for voluntary compliance once
a Notice of Violation is issued is seven calendar days. The property is posted and a notice is mailed to the owner of record.
If weeds remain after seven calendar days from
the date of the Notice of Violation then an Administrative Citation is issued with a $150 fine. Another seven calendar days are given to comply. The property is posted and a notice is mailed to the owner of record.
The property is inspected again on the eighth day after the Administrative Citation was given. If the weeds have been removed the $150 fine is reduced to $50. Failure to remove the weeds results in an additional $50 fine that is added to the $150 citation. The property owner will also be billed for the cost of the cut at a
rate of $60.00 per hour, plus a 25 percent administrative fee.
Weed bills are filed as special assessment tax
liens if not paid.
To report a weed violation, please call the Neighborhood
Services Division at 970.244.1583 or fill out and submit a Complaint
Report.
To report weeds along major streets, please call the City Parks Department at 970.254.3868.
Noxious Weeds
The State of Colorado requires management for eradication
of noxious weeds. Russian knapweed and Purple Loosestrife are the
two most common in Grand Junction and a management plan for eradication
is requested from the property owner. Visit
the Colorado
State University web site for more information on how to manage
noxious weeds.
